You see many displays of discourtesy on the road every day. These are not just brought on
by speeding or weaving in and out of traffic or tailgating. Discourtesy can include:
-
Failure to give proper signals in time when turning
-
Sounding the horn unnecessarily
-
Haphazard parking
-
Steering with one hand and smoking with the other, or using a hand phone
-
Driving in the middle of the road and blocking other vehicles’ passage – this is known
as road hogging
-
Speeding through water and splashing pedestrians
-
Unnecessary noise caused by modified exhausts
-
Callous maintenance of cars, causing smoke emission and pollution of the environment
-
Failure to move over to the right or left and slow down or stop, to allow passage for
emergency vehicles
|
In fact, some acts are so inconsiderate they often bring on danger to other road users and
worse yet, cause accidents:
-
Driving fast when visibility is bad
-
Overtaking around a bend or at areas when others cannot see the driver
-
Deliberately preventing other vehicles from overtaking by speeding up
-
Callous maintenance of cars – if your headlights, tail lights or brake lights are not
working, other vehicles cannot see you in the dark; this also applies to worn out rear
reflectors
-
Failure to switch on headlights or small lights when visibility is bad, and this includes
heavy greyness during thunderstorms
-
Failure to dip high beams when encountering other approaching vehicles – keeping
your beams up will blind the other driver and may cause him to swerve into your path
-
Failure to dip high beams when following a vehicle that you are unlikely to overtake -
keeping your beams up will blind the driver in front
-
Making U-turns whenever there is a break in the road divider (even though a ‘No U-Turn’ sign may not be visible, this is an offence)
-
Continuing a journey when you are tired may cause you to lose concentration and slow
down in reflexes - do take a break at a rest stop to refresh before proceeding on your
way
